All About Cutting Glass to Size

Glass is a non-pliable material, made by cooling to rigidity. So, how do glaziers work with different sizes of glass?

As we do accept custom glass projects, our qualified glaziers know that glass needs to be prepared in our factory before going on site. A lot of our custom projects require pre-cutting glass. It’s a little bit intimidating if you’re not a glazier, but it really is quite easy.

Tools you need:

  • Glass cutter
  • Lubricant
  • Square jaw pliers
  • Protective gloves
  • Marking pencil
  • Ruler or yardstick

Start cutting glass:

  1. Have a clean, flat surface for cutting.
  2. Clean the glass before cutting.
  3. Measure the glass. Mark only when needed and mark the reverse side.
  4. Make sure your cutter is lubricated.
  5. Start scoring the glass in the direction towards you
  6. Both ends of the glass must be scored to separate glass easily
  7. Flip and apply some pressure to separate the excess glass
  8. Use pliers when cutting curved edges to separate excess glass
